Physiatry Specialist - Joan K Szynal, M.D.

Dr. Szynal is originally from Indianapolis.  She graduated from Butler University with a degree in chemistry then attended Indiana University School of Medicine.  Dr. Szynal then completed a 4 year residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (or Physiatry).  She was medical director of Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital in Denver for 2 years then her interests led to outpatient musculoskeletal practice and she started Lutheran Outpatient Rehabilitation.  Ultimately Dr. Szynal moved back to Indiana and has practiced in Goshen for 27 years.

Dr. Szynal is experienced in treating a variety of orthopedic problems such as herniated cervical and lumbar discs, shoulder pathology, knee pain and other musculoskeletal problems such as fibromyalgia.  She specializes in taking time to evaluate a patient’s complete muscular history and tailoring a program of conservative care which may include prescribing medications, initiating physical therapy, performing joint injections or ordering other diagnostics as needed such as xrays, MRI scans, etc….

Dr. Szynal also performs electrodiagnostic testing called EMG/NCV tests.  These tests are sometimes needed to further evaluate the status of a possible nerve entrapment in the arm or leg, a herniated disc or other muscle problems.  She often performs these tests as a consultant for hand and spinal surgeons in the michiana area.

Dr. Szynal is an active member of the North American Spine Society (NASS),  and the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Indiana State Medical Association. When not in the office she enjoys spending time on the lake water skiing and swimming.  She also loves tennis.
